Summer Plants to Press

Explore a time-tested herbal craft for all ages by learning how to expertly press and beautifully preserve the plants growing outside your door. In this creative online workshop, from Herbal Academy, you will learn how to press flowers, leaves, and other plant parts to preserve their color for years to come.

Pressing botanicals is both a creative pastime and a scientific pursuit as it encourages you to head outdoors, bask in the day’s unique beauty, and take a closer look at the plants flourishing in your region. After plants are pressed and preserved, they make wonderful study pieces for the curious herbalist who can observe things like leaf shape and flower structure directly on the plant itself—even in the middle of winter! Pressed Herb Jar Labels

Create beautiful jar labels for the herbs in your storage cabinet using your pressed botanicals. Material Jar label templates (available via the Flower Pressing for Herbalists Workshop) Permanent marker Pressed botanicals for each jar that you plan on labeling Scissors Glue (Mod Podge, rubber cement, or a neutral pH book-binding glue) Clear packing tape Glass jars (as many as you’d like to label/fill)

Directions

  1. Use a permanent marker to write the plant’s name across the bottom of the label.

  2. Use tweezers to gently pick up the pressed herb that you plan on featuring and lay it gently upon the label. Use scissors to cut it to fit, if needed. Some botanicals may be too big to include in their entirety, in which case you may choose to feature a recognizable leaf, a small bud, a few petals, or something else that will help you accurately identify the plant at a glance.

  3. Adhere the botanical and allow to dry.
