Basic Blending

The concept of an essential oil synergy is that the outcome of the blended oils is going to have greater value than the individual essential oils.

Blending can be done based on:

  • Morphology or Plant Part

  • Therapeutic action - physical, mental/emotional, spiritual

  • Chemistry/constituents

  • Scent/Notes:

    • Top Note oils are typically the presenting aroma. Due to their low molecular weight they evaporate quickly lasting up to 24 hours.

    • Middle Note oils are considered to be the heart of the blend creating balance and harmony of the blend and have a scent lasting about two (2) to three (3) days.

    • Base Note oils are considered a fixative. They have the heaviest molecular weight and have a scent that may last up to one (1) week.

Basic Blending Technique:

  1. Set your intention.

  2. Plan your blend: What is the purpose or goal? Who will be using the blend? How will the blend be used? Are there any safety concerns?

  3. Select the essential oils.

    1. Choose a ‘core’ or "primary" essential oil. This is chosen based upon your primary purpose or goal and addresses the primary concern. It is considered the heart of the synergy. If blending by note, select three oils: one top note, one middle note, and one base note from the same scent family or from complementary ones.

    2. Choose an ‘enhancer/support’ essential oil. This supports and strengthens the core/primary essential oil.

    3. Choose a ‘harmonizing/enhancing’ essential oil. This essential oil balances and enhances the vitality and purpose of the overall synergy. The harmonizing essential oil often has a decisive impact on the overall aroma and is chosen for both its aroma and ability to enhance the goals of the synergy.

    4. (Optional): Choose 1-2 additional essential oils. These additions would be either an enhancer or harmonizing essential oil.

  4. Before blending the selected essential oils together, check the aroma of the blend by placing the open bottles, at the same height, in your hands and slowly swirling the bottles under your nose. At this time, you can make any needed adjustments to your blend formulation.

  5. When ready, prepare your blend. A rule of thumb is to base your formula off of 100 drops to determine the percentage of each oil in your blend. 100 drops will give you 1 tsp (15 ml) of blend.

  6. Allow the blend to rest for a day. After a day, smell the blend again and make any adjustments you want.
